English country dancing is a social, set-based dance form that originated in the 15th century. Rooted in English folk traditions of the 14-1500’s, the form began influencing courtly dance by the 15th century and became highly popular at the court of Queen Elizabeth I, blending with Italian Renaissance influences.

- The English Dancing Master published in 1651, a definitive collection of tunes and instructions that went through many editions, establishing the “longways for as many as will” style. Expanding in the 18th century, the dance became a staple of social life, spreading to America and across Europe. It was considered essential for cultured individuals, featuring prominently in the novels of Jane Austen.
